If you’re having trouble with your denture shifting or not staying in place, you’re not the only one! Many people experience issues with their dentures, and it can be frustrating when they slip, especially while eating or during conversation. But before you reach for the denture adhesives, continue reading. You’ll find out that there are several reasons your dentures might feel loose and there are many solutions to fix the issue!
Loss of Suction
While this isn’t typically a problem for upper dentures, lower appliances rely on natural suction to stay in place. This makes it harder for them to stay put if your mouth is dry or if there’s an imperfection in the fit of your prosthetic. This can be made worse when speaking or chewing as your tongue and cheeks can push against it, causing it to shift.
Try to make sure that you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth moist. In addition, soak your denture overnight to help it hold its shape and keep it wet when you put it in. This should help with the suction issue.
Jawbone Loss and Gum Changes
After tooth loss, your jawbone will begin to gradually deteriorate due to lack of stimulation. At the same time, your gum tissues can change shape, especially if you’ve been wearing dentures for a while. These changes can cause your dentures to fit less securely than they did when you first got them. This natural shrinkage is known as resorption and is one of the most common reasons for loose lower dentures.
To combat this, be sure to visit your dentist regularly for refitting and adjustments. This will ensure that your prosthetics always fit the way they should—nice and snug!
Lack of Muscle Control or Skill
The muscles in your mouth, especially your tongue, can cause your lower denture to shift if they’re not used to your appliance. Learning how to control these muscles takes time and practice. However, over time, you’ll adapt and find it easier to keep your dentures in place.
If your dentures are constantly uncomfortable or slipping, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dentist. Solutions like a denture reline or adjustments can often make a big difference. In some cases, dental implants could even be considered to secure your dentures in place. This would give you a more stable and comfortable fit. Whatever your issue, you and your dentist can solve it together.
